It's going to be hot, free, and easy in the city tomorrow night, so be sure to come by the first part of Erik Otto's epic solo show, Tomorrow Is Never Promised, right here at fabric8 from 7-10PM. He's been working long and hard on his largest exhibition to date, with the second part opening at White Walls on September 11, and it's a show to be reckoned with.

Guest food carts the Pizza Hacker and Creme Brulee Cart will be selling their edible art as well. This is going to be a good nigh!

The opening coincides with the Fairfax Art Walk, a monthly event started by Maxwell on the same block that brings you fine retail by Turntable Lab, HUF, Diamond Supply Company, Animal Restaurant, and Canter's Deli. Please join us!

Don't forget about the opening of "Thylacine Circus" tonight 6-9PM. Johnny Siu dug into his vast collection of vintage frames and keys to bring you this precious exhibition of gothic illustrations, so come have a look-see.

Opening Thursday, September 2, 7-10PM, fabric8 is pleased to present the first half of Tomorrow Is Never Promised, a solo show featuring new works by artist Erik Otto. The second half of the show will debut the following week at White Walls.

In his largest solo show to date, filling two San Francisco galleries, Erik Otto illustrates the themes of struggle one must face in order to achieve growth – self-fulfillment versus self-destruction and how the transient nature of time dictates the uncertainty of life. The new body of work, which is more abstract and expressive then his past pieces, addresses the idea of facing one’s personal fears in order to reach true potential and real progress.

Erik Otto exhibits in galleries nationally and internationally. With an education in Illustration, Design, Screen Print, and Street Art, Otto practices his art across multiple disciplines. In addition to painting, he has designed and built large-scale installations, theatre sets, retail storefronts, private commissions, and independent film sets. Otto recently completed the acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program at Recology San Francisco and is committed to using recycled paint and materials to produce work that is both expressive and conceptual. He received his BFA from San Jose State University and currently lives and works in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Tomorrow Is Never Promised will be on exhibit from September 2 through October 4 at fabric8; as well as from September 11 through October 3 at White Walls Gallery. Be there!

thylacine circus opening

Please join us on Saturday, August 21, 6-9PM for the opening of "Thylacine Circus", a solo show by artist Johnny Siu.

Sui is a San Francisco illustrator and aesthete who specializes in darkly darling drawings on perfectly-packaged paper or subtly-stained surfaces. He has also decorated the city streets with flowery wheatpastes asking "Where are all my thylacines?" He will be creating an entire collection of small, affordable pieces so be sure to get one before they're gone.

multifarious tendencies

Friday, August 6, 7-10PM marks the opening of our next exhibition, a group show called Multifarious Tendencies with artists Adam Flores, Brett Amory, Micke Tong, and Kevin Earl Taylor and curated by Sandra Silvoy.

While different in style and background, these artists translate a mutual concern for the particularities of human tendency. Touchstones of the human experience arise in combining these multifarious tendencies.

Brett Amory was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and moved to San Francisco in 1996 to study motion pictures at the Academy of Art. After one drawing class, he switched his major to fine art and started his first body of work called “Waiting,” a series of paintings about the anticipation of the next moment, which he still continues to paint today.

Adam Flores illustratively analyzes and illuminates contemporary issues that are often questioned but rarely answered -- religion, mortality, society, consumption, and the improbable acquisition of the American Dream. He holds a BFA from Academy of Art University.

Kevin Earl Taylor holds a BFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design and has exhibited throughout the United States as well as internationally. Primarily an oil painter, he has lately been exploring animals and other subject matter that people consider sacred.

Micke Tong perceives art as his way of assimilating into humanity. Much of his work reinterprets life and does so through unusual use of color, shape, and transparency. In his latest series, he builds three dimensional landscapes that have graphical pop-art sensibilities with underlying narrations that touch upon current events, politics, religion and sociology. He holds a BFA in New Media Arts from Academy of Art University and is the Art Director for Computers & Structures, Inc.

Curator Sandra Silvoy recently earned a degree in Art History/Art Management from the University of San Francisco. She has worked with White Walls, Art Business, KQED, KALW, and Electric Works.

Multifarious Tendencies will be on exhibit from August 6 through August 30, 2010.

Please join us next Saturday, July 10, 7-10PM, for the opening of our biggest show to date, Inside Outside, featuring indoor and outdoor works in our brand-new sculpture garden by Daniel James Burt and Romanowski in collaboration with Flora Grubb Gardens.

Exploring the concept of “inside” beauty being brought outside, and vice versa, this collection of sculpture and assemblage features work that is both organic and man-made. Plant life inhabits art in living, growing pieces throughout the existing gallery, while artwork makes it way outdoors into our recently-expanded garden.

Daniel James Burt is a San Francisco-based sculptor whose intuitive style integrates mixed media to create installations and stand-alone sculptures. His use of body parts to create a series of landscapes as a means of portraiture garnered a commission that rests alongside a Ruth Asawa sculpture. He has a BFA from the University of New Mexico as well as an MFA from Academy of Art University, where he currently teaches graduate level Figure Modeling and Anatomy.

Romanowski is a Swiss-born artist, musician, and DJ who has made San Francisco his home since 1988. His keen sense of style and extraordinary talent for vintage shopping has made him one of the most sought-after DJs and collectibles hustlers this side of Zurich. His artwork includes top-notch spray stencil pieces and found object assemblages that are coveted by music and design aficionados around the world.

Inside Outside will be on exhibit from July 2 through August 2. Don't miss it.

A group exhibition celebrating San Francisco architecture and femininity, it will feature undoubtedly lovely paintings from artists Adam Caldwell, Gianluca Franzese, Nome Edonna, Telopa, and Ursula X Young. Ursula X Young is a painter, illustrator, and graphic designer whose urban fairy tale images have become a trademark of street culture in San Francisco and beyond. She finds inspiration in the organic yet urban landscape of the city and its surroundings, and is also highly influenced by her travels and the variety of beings that she encounters along the way. She holds a degree from Parsons School of Design in Illustration.

Nome Edonna is a self-taught artist born in California and residing in San Francisco since 1999. Known for his smooth-sided biomorphs that combine the animal and the mechanical, his recent forays into the glamour of the female form have been well-regarded.

Telopa studied painting under scholarship at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. The son and father of artists, his elegant mannerist style of painting women brings a classic beauty to his simultaneously surreal subject matter.

Adam Caldwell’s work juxtaposes elements of abstract expressionism and classical figuration. While at the California College of Arts and Crafts, he created collage drawings that layered disparate images. He translated this method to oil painting, starting with an abstract background and then adding photorealistic details, allowing the work to dictate its own construction. The resulting palimpsest of figures and abstract shapes represents the conflicted and paradoxical emotions that underlie his work.

Gianluca Franzese studied painting at Pratt Institute before transferring to the Florence Academy of Art to learn the skill and technique of the Old Masters. Now based in San Francisco, he documents San Francisco’s unique architecture before it is forever destroyed.

Chamber Made is the moniker of collab duo Leon Loucheur and Mike Gallegos. The artists and long-time friends had been riffing off each other for awhile but last year decided to delve further into the team effort. With Loucheur providing the realist angle and Gallegos bringing the graffiti sensibility, their pieces evoke a modern balance that most anyone can appreciate.

brian barneclo opening tonight!

Tonight is the night to get your fix of amazing art, delicious food, and the unspoken love between the two at our opening for Systemic: New Works by Brian Barneclo.

You may have seen Barneclo's tasty murals at eating and drinking establishments such as NoPa, Rye, Nopalito, Puccini & Pinetti, and Escape from New York Pizza (Redwood City). He has also created artisan chocolates for Recchiuti, wine labels for Sessions, and the graphics for writer Steven Gdula's Warmest Room in the House blog.

To celebrate the opening of his solo show, we will also be hosting some of SF's finest food carts. Adobo Hobo will be serving up their refined chicken goodness along with irresistible pork sisig tacos. Good Foods Caters will have scrumptious pulled pork, beef brisket, or spicy tofu sandwiches plus macaroni 'n cheese topped with their homemade bacon. And as icing on the cake, Gobba Gobba Hey and the Creme Brulee Cart will bring their addictive sweets.

This April we will be having our first juried show, called SuperNatural and themed around fauna, flora, and nature-related things + beyond. If you or someone you know would be ideal for this show, please consider submitting artwork.

The deadline is March 1 but we highly encourage early submissions. All pieces must be original artwork that has not been shown previously, at least 16in. x 16in. in size, and ready to hang. The Last Shall Be First: New Works by Erik Otto @ Recology (aka the SF Dump), Friday, January 22, 5-9PM:: See what artist Erik Otto has come up with during his 3-month artist-in-residence at the SF Recycling and Disposal Center. It will no doubt make you think twice about what you throw out.

This Friday, November 13 from 7-10:30PM, 1AM Gallery and guest curator James "gaNyan" Garcia (Heavy Hitterz) present the opening "Tabi Tabi Po", a group art show about Filipino folklore creatures by contemporary Filipino artists. Co-sponsored by fabric8, Pablo Gallery (Manila), KULARTS, and Bindlestiff Studio, this month-long exhibition's roster features painters, illustrators, and artisans from the US, Philippines, and Norway.

Check the cultural vibes from Ciriaco Sayoc, Andre Sibayan, gaNyan, GEM, Marikina, Peabe, Isabel Roxas, Stuter, Pancho Abalos, Dyno Angry Woebots, and more. There will also be a Bindlestiff Studio puppet show on December 5, and regular screenings of the "Tabi Tabi Po" documentary. A percentage of the art sales will be donated to the victims of typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng through BAYAN Philippines and BALSA (Bayanihan Para Sa Sambayanan). Mabuhay!

We are pleased to present Altered States, Dreamscapes and Underworlds, a solo show featuring new works by Ursula Xanthe Young.

In the first solo exhibition at the new fabric8 Galleries, Young explores themes of other worldliness, altered states of consciousness and the dream sequence while simultaneously expanding her own artistic boundaries via different techniques of color, texture, and medium.

Using her recognizable urban starlets as the subjects of the visual stories, this collection of new works focuses on the natural urge of the human psyche to seek other dimensions -- both natural and forced -- in search of answers to the greater existential questions of the human experience.

Altered States, Dreamscapes and Underworlds will be on exhibit from September 28 through November 3 at fabric8 Galleries, 3318 22nd Street, San Francisco, and open 7 days a week.

The opening reception for Altered States, Dreamscapes and Underworlds will be held on Friday, October 9, from 7-11PM.

Ursula X Young will also be holding SF Open Studios in the garden gallery at fabric8 on the weekend of October 10-11, 11AM-6PM, so be sure to mark your calendars for a visit to see EVERYTHING she has available!

domesticates : new work by grant gilliland

We are pleased to present Domesticates, a solo show featuring new works by San Francisco artist Grant Gilliland aka The Gross Uncle.

Domesticates will feature portraits of animals and their two-legged friends, more commonly referred to as human beings. It also marks Grant's first-ever solo show of new works. This painter and illustrator's cutely grotesque renderings in vibrant color combinations have graced our walls for a couple of years now so we're excited to have him put together an entire collection.

Domesticates will be on exhibit from June 20 through July 18. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 20, from 7pm-10pm, so please come on by!

If you're in the Washington DC area on July 25, Heavy Hitterz Maryland is a not-to-miss event. Presented by gaNyan, Art Whino Gallery, and fabric8, this third annual showcase of emerging artists will feature 60+ international painters and illustrators from around the globe including lots of fabric8 favorites.

gaNyan keeps it coming with his Heavy Hitterz group art show, which started in San Francisco in 2007 and made its way to Manila, Philippines last year. Heavy Hitterz Maryland's opening reception is on Saturday, July 25, from 7-10 at the Art Whino Gallery. The show will be on exhibit through August 15.

Grant Gilliland and Andy Stattmiller are two of the numerous emerging artists we have met and worked with since opening our shop in the Mission. Close buddies and co-graduates of the Columbus College of Art and Design, these guys independently made their way to San Francisco to pursue art. They first showed up at fabric8 together, to present their first self-published book of black-and-white illustrations.

Since then, we've worked with them individually and have had the pleasure of showing and selling many of their pieces. They each have a great sense of color, but most often collaborate and show their black-and-whites.

We finally met Andre Karpov, the man behind the murals at Pizzeria Delfina (18th near Guerrero) and Range (Cunningham off Valencia btwn 19th and 20th), who brought by this print of a new watercolor painting of his, titled "She Grew On Me".

Andre has been painting for many years and began his tutelage under a Japanese tea master at the age of 14. He is currently working on an entire body of work so we look forward to seeing more from him.

Meanwhile this print of "She Grew On Me", sized at 19in. x 11in., and another can be yours for only US$ 40.

We're happy to introduce the work of Geoff Campen aka Hans, an SF architect and fabric8 customer who has been painting surreal architectural landscapes for many years. He has no formal art training but has been drawing and sketching his entire life, including funny-looking house plans and elevations from the age of 10.

Happy new year (calendar and lunar)! And apologies for the absence ... we're back and have lots of new art plus our (1)3th Anniversary Party on February 7 so stay tuned.

First up, one of our favorites Nome Edonna dropped off these recent pieces. For those unfamiliar with the talent, Nome is a self-taught painter who has been gracing streets and gallery walls with his surreal stylings for many years. If you frequent the Mission District, you have probably noticed big stains and spots on sidewalks that have been re-painted into pieces of art. That is the work of Nome.

He has also shown in galleries and salons like 111 Minna and is part of the Convergence book crew along with Damon Soule, Mars-1, David Choong Lee, Brett Amory, and Oliver Vernon. Here are the four small paintings he brought in. Email us for more info.
